The risks of Bayer´s genetically modified Rice LL62

The European Union is due to make a historic decision on whether or not to approve genetically modified (GM) rice for consumption in the EU. The result of this decision will not only affect European consumers but will also determine the fate of the environment and farmers in rice producing countries. A European approval of GM rice would allow the German biotech company Bayer to promote the production of GM rice in developing countries. The consequences for the environment and the well-being of farmers in developing countries of growing this GMO has not been considered in the EU´s approval process.

BAYER´S LIBERTY LINK RICE: ITALIAN FARMER´S ASSOCIATION WITH GREENPEACE AGAINST IMPORT OF GM PRODUCTS

Novara – Confederazione italiana agricoltori (farmer‚s association) has signed a petition promoted by Greenpeace that asks to reject the proposal made by the German company Bayer that asked to the EU Commission the authorization to import in Europe a kind of genetically modified rice called ‘LLRICE62‚. „The risk is that the rice produced with genetically modified organisms could contaminate the European crops putting at risk several kinds of rice that exists in Europe“ CIA president in Novara, Vercelli and VCO (the provinces where half of the Italian rice is produced) Sergio Suardi says. „We must incentive the research of new varieties of rice with genetically modified organisms free systems.”

According to CIA the consequences of the go ahead to the transgenic rice will be determinant also for many developing countries. A CIA‘s note asks a moratorium on the commercial cultivation and import of this rice and an analysis on the impact of commercialization for the developing countries. According to the people who have signed the petition the European go ahead to the transgenic rice will allow to the bio-tech companies to promote the cultivation of genetically modified rice especially in the underdeveloped areas paving the way to the genetic contamination of the varieties of rice which already exist and endangering the main food source of the local people. The petition ends remembering to the EU Commission and the member states that the great majority of citizens is against the use of genetically modified organisms in farming. “We must protect the consumers and farmers‘ interest“ CIA says.
